We have imported this beautiful, humanely produced French angora yarn from Joseph Galler based in New York.This decadent fibre comes in a variety of gorgeous, luminous shades. Extremely warm, this lighter-than-air yarn feels sumptuous against the skin and is a favourite for cowls, hats, mittens and scarves. Galler Yarns have imported this angora since 1951 and in 2013, this pure natural yarn made from fibre, hand-combed from carefully tended Angora rabbits, was officially designated as an Artisan Product in France.
French Angora is superior to any other rabbit hair. With extra long, silky fibres and 30% guard hair, this yarn “blooms” and produces an exceptional halo. Hand-combed, the rabbits are not harmed at all in the process of cultivation; the breeder takes advantage of the natural moulting cycles to harvest the longest fibres possible and uses a time honored French technique for grooming which is completely painless and gentle. The rabbits live as pets, remaining their whole lives on the small farm where they are raised. Buying Galler supports the humane cultivation of this fibre which is becoming increasingly rare and valuable.
Gauge depends on needle size so this yarn can be knitted up as a DK or worsted, in a dense fabric or an open, lace one. Swatching can help determine correct gauge for your project; the swatch yarn can be re-used if undone gently.
